Ending Racism on the Runway

In the many years  of watching designers display there collection, I rarely saw models that look like me.  Even while reading the  fashion magazines I never saw a lot of diversity in the ads from designers such as Versace, Calvin Klein, Donna Karen, Gucci, Louis  Vuitton, Moschino,  and many more.  I never understood why there weren’t more black, asian, or latino models gracing the ads and runways.  It always seem the white female models were the norm.

Recently, I came across an article where a formal model agency owner name Bethann Hardison  is campaigning to increase diversity on the runway. Bethann has been reaching out to several fashion councils in Britain, Milan, and Paris with the letter below.

Screen Shot 2013-10-03 at 9.36.34 PM

Bethann’s also stated “Calvin Klein, Marc by Marc, Proenza Schouler, Victoria Beckham, Rag & Bone, BCBG, Rodarte, Mulberry, Preen, Prada, Versace, Marni, Celine, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, among many others. Designers called out include Calvin Klein, Marc by Marc, Proenza Schouler, Victoria Beckham, Rag & Bone, BCBG, Rodarte, Mulberry, Preen, Prada, Versace, Marni, Celine, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, among many others. It’s immediately apparent that, far from being leaders in the industry, big-name designers are some of the worst offenders.”

Also, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), headed by Diane von Furstenberg, is preparing for talks with Bethann Hardison and The Diversity Coalition’s accusations of racism.

I commend Bethann’s and others attempt to bring awareness and push for more diversity on the runway. It’s just sad that this topic even exist.
